Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. Over the years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 because of its damage to the environment. Introducing R-410A To reduce environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now engineered to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, making it ozone-friendly. You can feel great about using this refrigerant in Huffman because it’ll help make your cooling system work efficiently, reliably and quietly, and deliver the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to investigate upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is totally phased out. The old refrigerant will become hard to find in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Air Houston Mechanical LLC work with R-410A, so you can be sure we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. Additionally, avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
