Do I Need a Zoned Home?

A zoned heating and cooling system splits your home into two (or more) zones that are altered by its thermostat. Are some rooms in your home more comfortable than others? Do you have hot and cold spots? Many factors could play into this, but a zoned home comfort system just may be the one solution you need. Zoning will not only keep you more comfortable, but when teamed with programmable thermostats, it may also help you save on your heating and cooling costs.

How Does It Work?

After the zones of your home have been mapped out, zoned heating and cooling runs by using dampers that are installed into your ductwork. These dampers control air flow through your entire home. Each zone of your home has its thermostat installed to allow you to personalize and control your comfort. All of the individual thermostats are connected to a control panel that runs your HVAC system.

Is A Zoned Home Right for Me?

A simple way to envision the importance of zoning is to imagine you controlled every light in your home with one switch. That would be very inefficient and wouldn’t make much sense. The same is true for having one thermostat taking care of your entire home. With a zoned heating and cooling system you have control of every zone of your home. Zones are usually mapped out by determining the areas in the home that have similar heating and cooling needs.

Even homes that are appropriately insulated and constructed well can be impacted by hot and cold spots. Some common architectural features that lead to this are multiple stories, large windows, and vaulted ceilings. As we all discovered in science class, heat rises. That means that your top floors are going to be warmer than lower levels. It only makes sense to have an individual thermostat for different levels of your home. Zoned homes can also be adjusted to your family’s personal comfort needs.

A zoned home will not only save you money but will keep you and your family more comfortable.
